SUMMARY:The Washboard Union with Special Guest Raquel Cole
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE ARTIST \nOn their new album Everbound\, The Washboard Union secure their status as one of Canada’s preeminent country bands with 10 songs that celebrate the simple joy of life. The follow-up to their 2018 album What We’re Made Of—which earned the trio their first JUNO Award for Breakthrough Group Of The Year—Everbound keeps the good times rolling with an irresistible blend of roof-raising anthems and poignant ballads. \nThe impeccable three-part harmony and top-notch musicianship once again displayed by Aaron Grain\, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts is only one aspect of The Washboard Union’s appeal. With about 30 songs in the running to make Everbound’s final cut\, the group was determined to offer only their best material\, aided by the keen ears of Nashville producers Gordie Sampson\, Thomas “Tawgs” Salter and producer Karen Kosowski\, who also co-wrote the album’s uplifting first single “Country Thunder.” Accompanied by a video starring puppet versions of Aaron\, Chris and David\, its quick rise up Billboard’s Canada Country chart made the song their highest charting single to date.

SUMMARY:Donovan Woods
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Donovan Woods with full band to the Algonquin Theatre on April 23\, 2022. \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nLate at night\, when a hush fell over the house after his kids went to bed\, Donovan Woods got to work on his latest album\, Without People. In a makeshift recording studio at his Toronto home\, the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter tracked his vocals and guitar alone and then emailed files to producer James Bunton. As Woods’ new songs took shape\, backing musicians sketched out their own parts in isolation from their respective homes. \nThis is not how Woods\, winner of the 2019 JUNO Award for contemporary roots album (for Both Ways) and whose global streams have surpassed 210 million\, prefers to create music. “So much of what I like about making records is the spontaneity of making music in a room together\, and we missed that\,” Woods says. “But we tried our best to re-create that feeling.” For an album made so piecemeal\, Without People (out now on Woods’ Meant Well label) has been acclaimed as “a nuanced experience” (American Songwriter)\, a thoughtful exploration of “fleeting interpersonal moments now under the microscope” (NPR/KUTX) and “various aspects of human connection” (Rolling Stone)\, and for striking “a gentle\, poignant note” (Billboard). \nWithout People prompted Woods to reckon with why his songwriting has been so invested in the human condition throughout his decade-long career. The short answer? Relationships are what bind us\, and what matters most is how we treat one another and whether we’re truly listening and trying to understand experiences distinct from our own. \nCo-written with Australian pop musician Hayley Warner\, “Here in Chicago” (out now) touches on Woods’ favorite subject. “It’s about learning that someone you still have feelings for is suddenly in the same town as you for the night\, and the inevitable thoughts and chain of events that might set into motion\,” he says. Equally at home in folk and country music\, Woods mines small moments to find greater truths on his latest album.

SUMMARY:Skydiggers
DESCRIPTION:Legendary Canadian Rockers Bring a Stripped Down Acoustic Concert to Canvas Brewery \nChemistry\, passion\, energy and evolution are a few words that come to mind when Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson talk about more than twenty-five years together in Skydiggers. Thanks to years on the road and in the studio\, Skydiggers are not only riding all of those years of momentum but continuing to evolve as well. According to Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson\, one of the keys is chemistry. “You can spend your life searching for chemistry” Andy muses. “For any relationship to remain vital and continue to grow you need chemistry. We were lucky to have found that early on with each other.” \nOne day\, if someone with perfect penmanship and a great memory for details takes up a Canadian Rock Family Tree project and plots the development of the Canadian roots rock community\, they may discover that many – if not all – branches and roots at some point interconnect with the Skydiggers. “We’ve played with other people\, other people have come into this circle and played with us. They’ve put their stamp on our music. But we recognize there is something consistent and something we all value that is threaded through all our records.” says Finlayson. Maize deeply appreciates the contributions of every artist who has played with the Skydiggers over the years. “We realize how fortunate we are to be part of a community. And so everybody is a Skydigger – past\, present and future.”

SUMMARY:Julian Taylor Solo
DESCRIPTION:Award Winning Folk Artist Brings an Intimate Solo Acoustic Concert to Canvas Brewery \nJulian Taylor is a songwriter at the top of his game\, garnering a recent CFMA Solo Artist of the year\, and was a Polaris Prize nominee for 2021. The Ridge\, his latest recording\, is a tender and heartfelt exploration of childhood and family\, and finds the artist at his most reflective. Taylor is an artist who defies genre\, but this latest recording takes us back to his roots\, evoking his childhood soundtrack of Lightfoot\, The Band\, and his grandfather’s classic country records\, while being true to his own path as leader of multiple bands. Of West Indian and Mohawk descent\, Taylor first made his name as frontman of Staggered Crossing in the early 2000s. These days\, however\, the soulful singer/guitarist might be on stage one night playing with his eponymous band\, spilling out electrified rhythm and blues glory\, and the next he is at a folk festival delivering a captivating solo singer-songwriter set. In everything he does\, Taylor has carved his own path\, creating genre-free music with a generosity of spirit and a strong belief in the healing powers of song. We are lucky to have him for such an intimate performance.

SUMMARY:Chantal Kreviazuk
DESCRIPTION:Chantal Kreviazuk – one of Canada’s most accomplished songwriters and recognizable voices –released her eighth studio album\, “Get to You\,” this summer. Heralded by the title track and first single\, the album features 11 songs\, all written and produced by Chantal with Dylan Wiggins. \n“This album means so much to me because it has a positive message throughout about self-love\, acceptance and perseverance\,” says Chantal. “It’s also the album I created the most independently without outside influence. It’s my essence of recording at the moment and for that I am so proud and happy.” \nThe choice to proceed with the release of an album during a global pandemic was an easy one for Chantal. “The wonderful thing about music is that it is always welcomed and needed\,” she says. “In times of crisis\, it offers solace and comfort. Without question\, now is the time to release music.” \nChantal Kreviazuk is a platinum-selling\, three-time Juno Award-winning artist from Winnipeg. In 2016\, she returned with her sixth album “Hard Sail” after a nearly seven-year break from recorded music. During that time\, she was focused on raising her three sons with husband Raine Maida\, as well as her other musical passion\, crafting songs. Chantal has written for Drake\, Pitbull\, Kendrick Lamar\, Britney Spears\, Christina Aguilera and Josh Groban and countless others. A holiday album – “Christmas Is A Way Of Life\, My Dear” – followed in 2019\, and a brand new album “Get To You” was released this summer. \nIn 2014\, Chantal and Raine became members of the Order of Canada\, recognizing their efforts to raise awareness and support for numerous causes including human and animal rights\, mental health\, education and the environment. Chantal has been an ambassador to War Child for nearly two decades and one of the organization’s founding artists. Raine and Chantal released their first collaborative album together as MOON VS SUN\, “I’m Going to Break Your Heart\,” as well as an accompanying documentary\, earlier this year.

SUMMARY:Sean McCann
DESCRIPTION:THE SHANTYMAN SINGS FOR THE SAINT:\nA CELEBRATION OF IRISH MUSIC WITH SÉAN MCCANN OF GREAT BIG SEA \n\nSÉAN MCCANN is a founder of the iconic Canadian band Great Big Sea and an Order of Canada recipient for his advocacy for people living with mental health and addiction issues. He has spent the past ten years touring the country singing and sharing his story with front line workers\, teachers\, students\, patients\, inmates\, veterans\, and anyone who has been affected by addiction or abuse. Séan was born with a love for traditional Irish music and you can hear it’s influence in his Great Big Catalogue and even more so in his recently released SHANTYMAN. SUMMARY:Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Holiday magic is made year after year by Ballet Jörgen’s traditional treasure The Nutcracker: a Canadian Tradition. Created by acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen to Tchaikovsky’s well-loved score\, this delightful classic is a favourite that brings magic to the holidays. \nABOUT THE PERFORMANCE \nThis is a beautiful Canadian work\, and audiences are taken on Klara’s familiar\, magical dream journey as she arrives in Canada and experiences winter landscapes filled with snowflakes\, lumberjacks\, Mounties\, and creatures of the woods. This celebration of the wonder of the season is based on the popular traditional story The Nutcracker and the King of mice by E.T.A. Hoffman\, enjoyed by audiences for years. The ballet’s second act is remembered for its celebration of varied dances\, and our charming divertissements of raccoons\, loons\, dragonflies\, and bears demonstrate Klara’s longing for the summer months as she travels excitedly through her dreams. The iconic\, show-stopping pas-de-deux in the final act is lovingly danced by Lord and Lady Birch as they usher Klara safely home at the end of the adventure. Ballet Jörgen’s Nutcracker is destined to become a national treasure that will warm the hearts of young and old alike. It is a holiday tradition that has showcased the magic of the season for years. Rediscover the joy of dance with the show that audiences flock back to again and again.

SUMMARY:One Man Big Sugar Show
DESCRIPTION:LEGENDARY BIG SUGAR FRONT MAN BRINGS AN INTIMATE NIGHT OF MUSIC AND STORIES TO CANVAS BREWING CO.\nMr. Johnson brings his massive\, well known and highly influential song book to life in this one man acoustic performance drenched in the blues and folk music that inspired his Big Sugar catalog. Singing his modern classics “Turn The Lights” and “Ride Like Hell”\, the Newfoundland anthem “All Hell For A Basement” and even classics he’s written for other artists like “Highway Of Heroes”. \nOver the past year and a half Gordie Johnson entertained a loyal army of fans online with anecdotes from his storied career: encounters with The Rolling Stones\, ZZ Top\, RUSH\, heroes and villains. Tales of triumph and disaster told with his impeccable comedic timing\, the One Man Big Sugar Show brings all of this live to the stage. \n2014 saw the highly successful album and sold out tour YARDSTYLE  “THE ACOUSTICAL SOUNDS OF BIG SUGAR”. “This will be a far more intimate presentation.” says GJ\, “Come on in my kitchen and I’ll cook us up a mess of tunes.” We can see the ingredients as they go in the pot… and cook he does. Acoustic Blues served up by one of Canada’s all time great guitarists\, GJ’s sardonic wit also makes for an evening of irreverent laughter and a truly memorable experience. \nThe Acoustical Sounds of Gordie Johnson is a ONE MAN BIG SUGAR SHOW. \n

SUMMARY:Okan
DESCRIPTION:Afro-Cuban roots with jazz\, folk and global rhythms. 2021 JUNO Award winner!\nTaking their name from the word for heart in the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria\, the women-led ensemble OKAN fuses Afro-Cuban roots with jazz\, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration\, courage and love. \nHaving recently worked with Bomba Estereo\, Lido Pimienta and Dayme Arocena\, OKAN recently followed up on their Juno-nominated and Independent Music Award-winning debut album Sombras\, with their sophomore release Espiral. This album recently won a 2021 JUNO for World Music Album. \nEspiral delves deeper into the group’s rich Cuban roots\, finding renewed inspiration in this rich musical heritage. The Santeria influences are most evident in the title track\, Espiral which uniquely blends guajira\, the folk genre of Eastern Cuba\, with Santeria-derived chants.  \nBorn in Havana\, Cuba\, Elizabeth Rodriguez is a classically trained violinist who served as concertmaster for Havana’s Youth Orchestra. Magdelys Savigne hails from Santiago de Cuba and graduated with honours in orchestral percussion from Havana’s University of the Arts. Both are also Grammy-nominees for their contributions to Jane Bunnett and Maqueque\, of which they are former members. \n\nThe Summer Season concerts will take place under the open air covered pavilion at the Huntsville Fairgrounds. These are in-person socially distanced shows with a maximum audience capacity of 100. Concerts will follow guidance and regulations set out by the Simcoe/Muskoka District Health Unit.
