Tony is well known for his contributions in the blues music genre with The Tony D Band and MonkeyJunk but his background is considerably more broad than that. This album brings together that blues foundation with a heavy leaning into psychedelic rock (70s Big Muff)\, Pseudo Flamenco with a surf angle (Argentinean Surf Tango) with a thread of jazz winding through it all.

DESCRIPTION:The Cameo Blues Band is a Toronto-based blues band\, originally formed in 1978. It is particularly notable for its association with several of Canada’s leading blues singers\, including Richard “Hock” Walsh\, Tony Flaim and Chuck Jackson\, all of whom were also associated with the Downchild Blues Band.  The band is named after the Cameo Lounge of Toronto’s Hotel Isabella\, as it then was\, in the 1970s and 1980s.

SUMMARY:Etwell Concert Series: Carlos del Junco
DESCRIPTION:Playing a ten-hole diatonic harmonica\, Carlos has developed the unique ability to play chromatically by using a recently developed “overblow” technique taught to him by jazz virtuoso Howard Levy. Overall\, this approach to the diatonic harmonica\, although much more difficult to achieve\, is in many ways more expressive and communicative than the mechanized tone produced by the chromatic harmonica. Carlos is one of the few pioneers of this overblow method\, bringing musical credibility to what has still been considered by many in the music industry – a fringe folk instrument. The sophisticated sound produced by del Junco is at once sensitive\, soulful\, and sexy while never forgetting the rawness inherent in blues music.

DESCRIPTION:Acoustic Floyd is Muskoka’s only Pink Floyd show. A textured take on the Floyd’s catalogue that reflects some of the music’s seldom thought of attributes. David Gilmour’s lap steel that slides across a lot of the band’s records. The ever-featured female background vocals reminiscent of gospel choirs. The solo saxophone that wails as much as Gilmour’s guitar. Then there’s the acoustic guitar-playing singer/songwriter that is Roger Waters\, and the early years with Syd Barrett. Acoustic Floyd presents a beautiful twist on the twistedly beautiful music of Pink Floyd. The band features Sean Cotton on acoustic guitar\, lead vocals\, and foot drumming; Tamica Herod and Liz Anderson on lead/backing vocals\, and percussion; George Axon on lap steel and guitars\, Chris Hess on saxophones\, clarinet\, bass\, and lead/backing vocals; Mike “Lopez” Phillip’s on bass guitar\, and accordion. $20 per person. \n

One has to look no further than her latest CD “Church House Blues” to feel the connection. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\n \nThere’s a tendency these days to try to pigeonhole any artist that attempts to breach the boundaries. Chalk it up to the restrictions of radio playlists or the media’s attempt to strictly define musicians by the music it believes artists ought to be making\, creative instincts be damned. Nevertheless Crystal Shawanda opted to defy those demands and chart her own path forward. \nNevertheless Crystal Shawanda opted to defy those demands and chart her own path forward. Initially signed to RCA in 2007\, she hit her stride as a country singer and songwriter when she scored a top 20 hit with her song “You Can Let Go” and subsequently tallied sales of over 50\,000 copies of her debut album Dawn of a New Day and subsequently debuted in the Billboard Top 20. Nevertheless\, she began to realize that the blues had captured her muse\, and with that\, she left the label\, shifted her stance and began recording albums that reflected her love of blues and her natural affinity for that sound. \nAs she once told an interviewer\, “The whole time I was singing Patsy Cline on stage\, I was singing Etta James at home.” \nHer new album Church House Blues (due April 17th on True North Records) reflects that dedication and devotion and finds her co-writing seven of the ten songs on the album. Produced by her husband\, collaborator and cowriter Dewayne Strobel\, it not only marks her fourth blues effort to date\, but one of her most demonstrative as well. That’s evident at the outset\, from the fiery delivery of the title track\, the riveting drive of “New Orleans Is Sinking\,” and the assertive strains of “Rather Be Alone\,” to the quiet\, contemplative desire and despair that scorches “Evil Memory\,” the radio-ready hooks illuminated in “Hey Love\,” and the emotive strains instilled in the bittersweet ballads “When It Comes To Love” and “Bigger Than the Blues.” At the center of it all is Crystal’s evocative vocals\, a powerful\, provocative force of nature that elevates each encounter and sends the album’s entries soaring towards the stratosphere. \nCredit is also due some spectacular guest artists\, including session superstar Dave Roe on bass (Johnny Cash\, Yola\, Ceelo Green\, among the many)\, the McCrary Sisters on backing vocals\, Dana Robbins of Delbert McClinton’s band on sax\, and Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd playing keys.
