SUMMARY:William Prince
DESCRIPTION:William Prince approaches the big questions with humility and curiosity. Prince’s influences and references\, from the gospel of his childhood to the pantheon of classic outlaw country singers\, baseball and the great beyond\, shape his approach to songcraft\, a masterclass in skillful simplicity. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nPrince’s JUNO Award winning debut Earthly Days\, released in 2015 and subsequently reissued by Glassnote Records and Six Shooter Records (Canada)\, introduced the songwriter’s poignant philosophy and rich baritone to the world. Prince made his breakout with the song “Breathless\,” which found audiences worldwide and reached the B List at BBC’s Radio 2. Reliever\, Prince’s sophomore album (2020)\, saw Prince reconvene with producers Scott Nolan in Winnipeg and Dave Cobb in Nashville. \nFor his second album\, Prince began with a single word\, Reliever\, which informed a collection of exceptionally rendered explorations of what\, who and how peace is found. Relievers come in all forms; for Prince\, it is song. Recent accolades include the Polaris Music Prize Long List\, SOCAN Songwriting Prize (“The Spark”) and the German Record Critics’ Award for Album of the Year. \nFor his newest release Gospel First Nation\, William Prince tells us this story through the music of his childhood\, songs of faith\, struggle and grace. These are songs he learned and sang with his father in that chapel named for his great grandfathers\, all preachers. William’s family home\, the community of Peguis First Nation\, is named for Prince’s ancestor\, Chief Peguis\, one of the highest regarded leaders of his time. When Chief Peguis was baptized\, he took the name William King; in keeping with royal protocol\, as an expression of pride and with the unknown weight of the consequences of all of the decisions he made with the arrival of colonizers on the land\, named his children Princes. Like names\, the songs of Gospel First Nation link generations\, from son to father to grandfather and back even further. \nPrince’s trajectory from Peguis First Nation in Manitoba\, Canada\, to opening for Neil Young\, has seen the relative newcomer find esteem and career-changing opportunity wherever he performs.

SUMMARY:Michael Kaeshammer
DESCRIPTION:An internationally renowned master of the keyboard and a first-class entertainer\, Michael Kaeshammer has developed a unique style that weaves threads of classical\, jazz\, blues\, boogie-woogie\, and stride into a whirlwind of joyful music-making. Dazzling\, daring\, and endearing. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nMichael Kaeshammer has invested a lot – countless hours at the keyboard\, hundreds of recordings\, thousands of live performances\, millions of miles in the air and on the road – all in pursuit of a mastery of 12 notes across 88 keys. But for the acclaimed Canadian pianist and singer\, there is no set destination\, no achievable end point on his path; it’s all about the journey itself\, and that journey will always be ongoing. \n“When I play\, I don’t worry about if it’s jazz or pop or classical or whatever; I just play what I hear and let the music decide what it wants to be\,” begins Kaeshammer. “Sure\, there are different styles\, different eras\, different approaches\, but when you really look at it\, it’s all just music based on 12 notes.” \nBorn and bred in Germany\, Kaeshammer began performing club\, theatre\, and festival stages throughout Europe in his early teens and continued on that trajectory after emigrating to Canada’s West Coast with his family in the mid-‘90s. His first studio album\, Blue Keys\, dropped in 1996 and spurred a consistent sequence of heralded releases and high-profile international performances. Through it all\, the world watched as he grew from child prodigy to full-fledged phenom; from unparalleled pianist to virtuosic songwriter. \n“I do listen to a lot of music\, but I’m not overly influenced by other people; it’s more about trying to learn something new every day\,” muses Kaeshammer about his musical evolution. “I’ll take pretty much any opportunity if it’s going to help me discover new things and help me progress.” \nThose opportunities have been as wide-reaching as the artist’s subsequent breadth of style\, and include: opening slots for the likes of Ray Charles and Anne Murray; stints backing singers like Marva Wright\, the late blues queen of New Orleans; co-writing sessions with rockers Randy Bachman and Colin James; official Olympic Games performances in several world cities; and TV specials on numerous networks – including one set to premiere on PBS in March 2020.

SUMMARY:Derek Edwards 'In Praise of the Ostrich'
DESCRIPTION:With ‘In Praise of the Ostrich’ Derek Edwards moseys back into town on horse-drawn comedy wagon; a searing meander down life’s twisting trails\, steered effortfully by this 30-year veteran. He returns with a payload of blissfully funny personal stories – a cacophony of shenanigans – set to tickle the ribs and warm the heart. \nWith an easy conversational style\, Derek reluctantly pulls his head out of the sand and launches into commentary on the influx of pot stores\, self-driving cars\, gambling tips\, the challenge of staying youthful … plus dressing warm. \nFrom Vegas to St. John’s\, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly his peers think so\, as evidenced by the fact that he’s a four-time nominee\, and winner of Best Standup Comic – Canadian Comedy Awards\, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy. As Rick Mercer says\, “Everyone knows Derek is the funniest man in Canada.”

SUMMARY:The Washboard Union with Special Guest Raquel Cole
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE ARTIST \nOn their new album Everbound\, The Washboard Union secure their status as one of Canada’s preeminent country bands with 10 songs that celebrate the simple joy of life. The follow-up to their 2018 album What We’re Made Of—which earned the trio their first JUNO Award for Breakthrough Group Of The Year—Everbound keeps the good times rolling with an irresistible blend of roof-raising anthems and poignant ballads. \nThe impeccable three-part harmony and top-notch musicianship once again displayed by Aaron Grain\, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts is only one aspect of The Washboard Union’s appeal. With about 30 songs in the running to make Everbound’s final cut\, the group was determined to offer only their best material\, aided by the keen ears of Nashville producers Gordie Sampson\, Thomas “Tawgs” Salter and producer Karen Kosowski\, who also co-wrote the album’s uplifting first single “Country Thunder.” Accompanied by a video starring puppet versions of Aaron\, Chris and David\, its quick rise up Billboard’s Canada Country chart made the song their highest charting single to date.

SUMMARY:The Stampeders - Celebrating 50 Years
DESCRIPTION:“They’re on their way\, to the city lights’ … and\, THE predominant Canadian Rock ‘n’ Roll band of the 1970s – The Stampeders – are bringing along all their classic hits: Wild Eyes\, Carry Me\, Oh My Lady\, Devil You\, Monday Morning Choo Choo\, Minstrel Gypsy\, Hit the Road Jack and\, of course\, the quintessential Canadian – and Hall of Fame – song\, Sweet City Woman! A veritable soundtrack to a whole generation that will ‘carry you home’ … maybe not to Birmingham … but back to a time of tie-dyed t-shirts and elevator shoes\, 15¢ coffee and homemade apple pie\, dating and dreaming … By the time The Stampeders get to the first chorus of the first song\, everyone will be singing along. \nNo seventies group represented Canada’s musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. A quick look at Canada’s music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors\, touring more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group during that time. In 1977 the trio: Rich Dodson (lead guitar)\, Kim Berly (drums) and Ronnie King (bass) parted company but reunited\, fittingly at the Calgary Stampede\, 15 years later in 1992. Since then they’ve been recognized by SOCAN for their Lifetime Achievement\, been inducted into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame on five occasions and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for their 1971 seminal hit Sweet City Woman. \nThe enduring musical legacy of The Stampeders\, celebrating 50 years… ‘better catch a noon train\, better get there for a rock ‘n’ rolling good time!’

SUMMARY:Donovan Woods
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Donovan Woods with full band to the Algonquin Theatre on April 23\, 2022. \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nLate at night\, when a hush fell over the house after his kids went to bed\, Donovan Woods got to work on his latest album\, Without People. In a makeshift recording studio at his Toronto home\, the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter tracked his vocals and guitar alone and then emailed files to producer James Bunton. As Woods’ new songs took shape\, backing musicians sketched out their own parts in isolation from their respective homes. \nThis is not how Woods\, winner of the 2019 JUNO Award for contemporary roots album (for Both Ways) and whose global streams have surpassed 210 million\, prefers to create music. “So much of what I like about making records is the spontaneity of making music in a room together\, and we missed that\,” Woods says. “But we tried our best to re-create that feeling.” For an album made so piecemeal\, Without People (out now on Woods’ Meant Well label) has been acclaimed as “a nuanced experience” (American Songwriter)\, a thoughtful exploration of “fleeting interpersonal moments now under the microscope” (NPR/KUTX) and “various aspects of human connection” (Rolling Stone)\, and for striking “a gentle\, poignant note” (Billboard). \nWithout People prompted Woods to reckon with why his songwriting has been so invested in the human condition throughout his decade-long career. The short answer? Relationships are what bind us\, and what matters most is how we treat one another and whether we’re truly listening and trying to understand experiences distinct from our own. \nCo-written with Australian pop musician Hayley Warner\, “Here in Chicago” (out now) touches on Woods’ favorite subject. “It’s about learning that someone you still have feelings for is suddenly in the same town as you for the night\, and the inevitable thoughts and chain of events that might set into motion\,” he says. Equally at home in folk and country music\, Woods mines small moments to find greater truths on his latest album.

Heralded by the title track and first single\, the album features 11 songs\, all written and produced by Chantal with Dylan Wiggins. \n“This album means so much to me because it has a positive message throughout about self-love\, acceptance and perseverance\,” says Chantal. “It’s also the album I created the most independently without outside influence. SUMMARY:Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Holiday magic is made year after year by Ballet Jörgen’s traditional treasure The Nutcracker: a Canadian Tradition. Created by acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen to Tchaikovsky’s well-loved score\, this delightful classic is a favourite that brings magic to the holidays. \nABOUT THE PERFORMANCE \nThis is a beautiful Canadian work\, and audiences are taken on Klara’s familiar\, magical dream journey as she arrives in Canada and experiences winter landscapes filled with snowflakes\, lumberjacks\, Mounties\, and creatures of the woods. This celebration of the wonder of the season is based on the popular traditional story The Nutcracker and the King of mice by E.T.A. Hoffman\, enjoyed by audiences for years. The ballet’s second act is remembered for its celebration of varied dances\, and our charming divertissements of raccoons\, loons\, dragonflies\, and bears demonstrate Klara’s longing for the summer months as she travels excitedly through her dreams. The iconic\, show-stopping pas-de-deux in the final act is lovingly danced by Lord and Lady Birch as they usher Klara safely home at the end of the adventure. Ballet Jörgen’s Nutcracker is destined to become a national treasure that will warm the hearts of young and old alike. It is a holiday tradition that has showcased the magic of the season for years. Rediscover the joy of dance with the show that audiences flock back to again and again.
